Meet Kristen Shearer – Supervisor of Guidance

Kristen ShearerWhen you step into Kristen Shearer’s office at Eastchester High School, you immediately recognize her her dedication to her staff and students.

Shearer outlined the work that is being done on the Comprehensive Guidance Plan for the District on a whiteboard and its heading clearly states the mission of the department: “School Counselors help ALL students in the areas of academic achievement, career & college readiness and social/emotional development.” The board embodies objectives, visions and practical steps to achieve those ends.

Government Comes To Life

Class meets with goverment officialsStudents found out through first-hand experience how government works on many different levels.

During the final week of October, students in Steve Borys’ Economics and Government class met with local and county officials who explained their roles and how they assist their constituents.

Día de Muertos – Day of the Dead

Students working on day of the dead projectThe Eastchester Middle School International Club and Art Club joined together to learn more about the Day of the Dead, also known as Día de Muertos.

The tradition has its roots in Mexico and Northern Central America and commemorates the lives of children and adults who have passed away. On Oct 31, families traditionally prepare their homes and then celebrate on Nov 1 and Nov 2.

Sudents with finished workParticipants often decorate with vibrantly colored sugar skulls. Eastchester students made their own sugar skulls out of scratchboards during a joint club meeting in October. They colored paper with bright colored pastels and then covered the entire surface black. Coffee and Conversation

Eastchester School Superintendent, Dr. Robert Glass met with community members on Oct. 22, for the first Coffee & Conversation.

Dr. Glass wanted to develop a venue for parents and community members to discuss pertinent topics and ask questions in an informal setting. The first Coffee & Conversation took place at the Barnes & Noble on White Plains Road.

Many topics were discussed, including safety, social and emotional wellness and opportunities for all students to reach their full potential.
