Hurricane Houses

Classroom of tech students in raincoatsThe rain poured, and the wind blew, pulling houses from their foundation. What naturally takes place during a hurricane, occurred during a hurricane simulation in one Eastchester Middle School classroom.

The sixth-grade STEM students completed their Hurricane House unit with Tom Boissonnault and John Blaser this week.  

Students showing off their hurricane proof houses"They find out about hurricanes, how they form and how they affect houses," said Blaser. "Then they apply what they have learned and build.  The most valuable part of the project is afterward when the students analyze their construction method, whether it worked and what they would do differently next time."

Matthew DeMarco Memorial History Bee

Eastchester Middle School students demonstrated their expertise in history on January 10, at the 3rd Annual Matthew DeMarco Memorial History Bee. The Eastchester High School Academic Challenge team led the bee that involved an action-packed competition. Questions focused on historical figures and events, including Erwin Rommel, Henry the VIII, Tesla, Sandra Day O'Conner, William the Conqueror, Vladimir Lenin, Brexit and the Stanley Cup! This year's first-place winner was sixth-grader Maximillian Lin and the second-place winner was eighth-grader John Risi

After the formal bee, middle schoolers, high schoolers and Eastchester HS graduates who returned from college to honor Matthew's memory, participated in an exuberant "after bee" filled with much laughter!

DARE Program

Eastchester Police Officer Stephen DiLegge teaches DARE Program at Greenvale.Every week Eastchester Police Officers Stephen DiLegge and Officer Joseph Pegna meet with fifth-graders at Greenvale and Anne Hutchinson as part of the Drug Abuse Resistance Education Program, commonly referred to as DARE.

The program has evolved over time and now focuses on the theme, "D.A.R.E. keepin' it REAL." During the 40-minute sessions, officers discuss vital issues that face young people in today's world and emphasize risk-taking and making correct choices. Students watch short videos, involve themselves in active discussions and review lessons in a workbook.Eastchester Police Officer Joseph Pegna meets students at Anne Hutchinson for DARE Program.

World Languages Holiday Piñata Party

On line to get Spanish, French, and Italian FoodEastchester High School students celebrated world languages and cultures at the Spanish Club's annual Piñata Party held on January 9th.

This year, the club invited members of the French and Italian Clubs to celebrate. They played world-language trivia, held a scavenger hunt and enjoyed delicious dishes.

Students at the eventThe event gets its inspiration from Los Tres Reyes Magos, Three Kings Day, and the clubs' officers explained how countries around the world mark the day.

"I love languages, and it is great to see how different cultures enjoy food and understand their traditions. It makes a better community," said Spanish Club President Lauren Naclerio.
