District Information


The Eastchester Board of Education consists of nine district residents, each elected to serve a three-year term without pay. Together, the nine trustees have broad legal powers and responsibilities for determining educational policy for the district, for supervising the administration of the schools and for levying taxes on properties to support the school district's operations.

Eastchester residents are invited and encouraged to attend the Board of Education meetings that are generally held two Tuesdays of each month at 8:00 pm. Check the district calendar for meeting dates.

Board of Education meetings, as well as other district events, are broadcast live or on tape over Cable Access Channels 24 and 78. The dates and times of all Board of Education meetings are posted online as well as in the district calendar.

Profiles of the 2019-2020 Eastchester Board of Education Trustees

Dr. Cheryl Smith (2019-2020 President)

Cheryl Smith was appointed to the School Board in February 2016 to fill an open seat after the resignation of a Trustee, and was elected later that year. She currently serves on the Education Committee (chair) and Facilities Committee, and is the BOE Liaison to Greenvale. Previously, she has been on the Labor and Community Relations committees.

Cheryl and her family moved to Eastchester ten years ago, drawn by the strong community and excellence of the town’s schools. Her son is in fifth grade at Greenvale; he is a musician in the school band and a cub scout in Pack 353, and he enjoys playing recreational baseball and soccer. Cheryl has been active in both the Waverly and Greenvale PTAs, serving as PTA council rep at Waverly and cultural arts chair at Greenvale.

Cheryl is associate professor of English at Baruch College, CUNY, where she is currently co-chairing the college self-study and re-accreditation process. She holds Ph.D. and Masters degrees in English from Tufts University. She teaches courses in world literature and literature in translation, early American literature, first-year writing, digital composition, and advanced essay writing. Her husband, Andres, was born and raised in the Bronx and works for the MTA.

Vito Catania

Vito Catania and his wife Chris have lived in the district for 39 years. Their son Joe, (EHS ’06) is a graduate of The University of Pennsylvania, with a degree in Systems Science and Engineering and recently completed the full time MBA program with an MBA in Finance and Accounting at Fordham's Gabelli School of Business.

Vito is the senior member of the Board and is currently serving in his eighth three-year term as a Board trustee. During his tenure on the board, he has served as Board President, Vice President and Secretary, each on multiple occasions. He was Chairperson of the Long Range Planning Committee for eight years and has served on the Labor Relations, Finance, and Safety Committees and is currently Board liaison to the Eastchester School Foundation.

As his son moved up through the school system, Vito was active in the Waverly, Anne Hutchinson, MS and HS PTAs. He has also been engaged in the community, serving as a volunteer baseball coach for many years and remained involved with the Eastchester Baseball League and also volunteered as a chaperone for the EHS Varsity Baseball Spring training trip to West Virginia for ten years. He is an active member of the Parish of the Immaculate Conception and Assumption. He served as a trustee on the Tower Club of Westchester board of managers for twelve years, and is President of the Giuseppe Garibaldi Lodge, Order Sons and Daughters of Italy in America as well as President of the Columbus Day Committee of Eastchester-Tuckahoe which is the umbrella group that sponsors the Columbus Day Festival held in Depot Square every September.

Vito holds a BA in Mathematics and an MBA in Finance, both from Fordham University.

David Carforo

David Carforo has lived in Eastchester since 1994 and has been familiar with Eastchester all his life as it is where his father Nick Carforo (Eastchester High School Class of 1946) was raised and where he operated a landscaping business. Dave has two daughters, both Eastchester High School graduates.

Dave has served as a trustee on the Board of Education since 2009, was Secretary in 2012, and Board President in 2013. He is currently a member of the Audit, Facilities and Education Committees. He has previously served on the Finance and the Community Relations Committees as well.

Dave is a real estate professional and has specialized in portfolio management and the development of rental housing since 1986. Originally from the Bronx, he graduated from Manhattan College and has earned advanced degrees from Bowling Green State University and New York University.

Tara Conte

Tara is a newly elected Board of Education Trustee in 2018 and is proud to serve the students in the community. She and her family moved to the community in 2016 due to the stellar reputation of the schools. Tara ‘s son is a proud first grade student in the Waverly School where he is thriving academically and socially.

She is currently employed by the City of Yonkers Department of Parks, Recreation and Conservation for almost 16 years as a Recreation Supervisor. Her position entails overseeing all aspects of staffing, funding, grant writing and programming for the special needs population. Tara was recognized in 2017 at the annual camp health inspection conference where the camp she oversees, Camp Pride, received accolades for flawless inspections and exceptional care given to their campers. She also works with the Police Benevolent Association and Police Athletic League in their annual Summer Barbeque and Holiday Party for the Developmentally Disabled.

Prior to being elected, Tara served on the Waverly PTA on the Wellness Committee and was a member of The Town of Eastchester Community Relations Committee. The Wellness Committee worked in conjunction with the Japanese Parents Association in creating the garden outside of the school for Beautification Day this past May. Currently, she is serving as the Waverly School BOE Liaison. She is also a member of the Community Relations, Audit and Board Policies Committees.

Tara is a graduate of Purchase College with a degree in Literature with a Concentration in Drama Studies. She also has Master’ Level Credits in Education from New York University.

Tara is an advocate for all students and has a special interest in special education and food allergy awareness.

She loves being an attendee in her free time at her son’s baseball games where her dad, Grandpa Neil, is an assistant coach. You may also see her with her family walking their friendly six pound dog, Mr. Soft. If you see them, please say hello! Tara is honored to serve our children in the beautiful Town of Eastchester.

Judah Holstein

Judah and his wife Jackie (EHS class of 1988) have lived in Eastchester since 1989 with their 3 children - 2 graduates of EHS (2013 and 2017), and an 8th grader.

Judah has been involved with the schools and community for many years - chaperoning trips, serving on PTA executive boards and committees, serving on the Eastchester School Foundation board, and as a School Board Trustee since 2013. He also served on the Westchester East Putnam Region PTA, Westchester Putnam School Boards Association, and the Eastchester Alumni Association.

Judah is a published author, and President of Miracom Computer Corp., a small software company.

Erin Murray

Erin is a newly elected trustee. She began her three year term this past July and is excited to work with veteran board members on the Community Relations committee, Labor Relations committee and the Technology committee. Erin will also be the BOE liaison to the Middle School PTA.

Erin and her husband Dennis moved to Eastchester ten years ago and presently have four children in the school district, two at the middle school and two at Greenvale. Erin volunteers coaching girls lacrosse for the Blue Devils, and can be found at many fields or gyms throughout the year cheering her kids on in soccer, basketball and lacrosse. She is also an active member of the IHM parish and has taught CCD for the past four years.

Prior to joining the Board of Education, Erin worked on the cultural arts committee for the Waverly PTA, the fifth grade committee for the Greenvale PTA and most recently as the co-president of the Greenvale PTA.

Erin is currently a fulltime mom but her background is in education and law. After graduating from Villanova University (B.A. 1996) Erin was an AmeriCorps teaching fellow in Philadelphia earning a masters in Education at St. Joseph’s University (MEd 1998) and a law degree from Temple University Beasley School of Law (J.D. 2003).

Rob Summer

Rob and his wife, Deborah, have been proud residents of Eastchester since 1996. They have four children who graduated from, or attend the Eastchester schools, Breyton (EHS graduate), Lea (EHS graduate), Austin (EHS) and Julia (EHS). Rob was first elected to the Board in 2008 after volunteering for the BOE’s Finance Advisory Committee. He most recently served as the Board President for the 2017-2018 school year and has also served as the chair of the Finance, Facilities Committee and Labor Relations Committees. He has also been a member of the Audit and Community Relations Committees. He has also been the BOE liaison to the High School,Middle School, Greenvale and Waverly PTAs and the Eastchester School Foundation. Rob was re-elected in May 2017 for his 4th three year term as a Trustee.

Rob is an attorney who is currently working for the New York State Workers’ Compensation Board as an Administrative Law Judge assigned to Brooklyn. Prior to becoming a judge Rob was a practicing attorney for over 20 years with a background in Personal Injury and Criminal Law. He is a graduate of St. John’s School of Law (J.D. 1990) and Binghamton University (B.A. 1987). He was raised in the Bronx and attended public schools. Deborah is an Occupational Therapist who works at Schnurmacher Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing located in White Plains.

Sally Veltidi (2019-2020 Secretary)

Sally joined the Board of Education in July, 2016. Sally is currently the chair of the Community Relations committee and the liaison to SEPTA and the Sports Club as well as a member of the Facilities committee. She has been the Superintendent of Parks and Recreation, Town of Eastchester since April 2011. She is responsible for all aspects of the Town Parks and Recreation Department including but not limited to budgeting, personnel issues, maintenance and scheduling of all fields and parks. She supervises up to 15 full-time Parks, Recreation, Buildings and Grounds employees. She also organizes and oversees recreation programs for toddlers to senior citizens, special events, basketball leagues and 4 day camps as well as Senior Programs and Services and the Senior Nutrition Center at Lake Isle Country Club.

Sally is a graduate of Clemson University, where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Parks Recreation Tourism Management. She also has her Masters of Science in Education, Recreation from Lehman College, City University of New York where she is currently an adjunct professor.
