Students walked into the Eastchester High School library carrying a red carnation, the flower representing Sociedad Honoraria Hispánica, the high school Spanish Honor Society.
Thirty new members were inducted into the organization on May 29 during a candle lighting ceremony that recognized their achievements and dedication to the Spanish language and culture.
Advisor Karina Barrera addressed the students in Spanish and said how proud she was of them and explained how their pursuit of a foreign language shows that they are open to new cultures. Barrera encouraged the new members to continue their studies throughout high school and college.
Students signed an official register for Sociedad Honoraria Hispánica and pledged to promote friendship and understanding between lands.Spanish teachers Edward Crespo and Maria Travieso-Davidson also attended the ceremony.
