Colonial DancingFourth grade students from Anne Hutchinson and Greenvale took a step back in time when their schools turned into Colonial Villages.

Students and parents dressed the part last month as they visited classrooms transformed into workshops. The children learned about each job or activity and then tried it themselves.

Churning ButterThey dipped wicks into wax to make candles, churned butter and explored the art of stenciling and tinsmithing.

Students discovered life was very different. “In colonial times it was strict and stern,” said Dylan Coughlin. “It was harder to be a child because you spent the day working and you couldn’t be a regular kid.”

Colonial OutfitsEastchester students spent some time in the Dame School where they participated in a spelling bee.

They took a break and played games, listened to music and danced. Then the students enjoyed a lunch of chicken nuggets, macaroni and cheese, corn bread and desserts.

Coleman Perkins couldn’t decide what he liked best. “Everything was awesome. Reading about it you can get an idea, but when you go here, you experience it!”

Thank you to the Anne Hutchinson and Greenvale PTA’s for sponsoring these events.
