Author Peter Lourie returned to the Eastchester School District on June 11 to share his experiences and expertise with young writers.
During an assembly, Lourie met with the entire student body at Anne Hutchinson and then he worked with individual fifth-grade classes. He provided the children with writing tips to connect with readers and said at this age, they are ripe to learn better writing techniques.
“I try to give them opportunities to explore, to make mistakes and to find order.”
Students looked at a picture and observed its details as they wrote a description. The author also played a tape recording of his travels in the Amazon to demonstrate how sound helps a writer remember details.
