KindergartenKindergarten students sat at their lunch tables eating and speaking with their new friends on Friday, September 6, when they spent their first full day at Waverly.  For most students, this was the first time they had ever eaten lunch in a cafeteria. What they learn now will form a foundation for their years ahead in the Eastchester School District.

Happy KindergardenerThroughout the first days and weeks, teachers spend time explaining new routines and they supervise the students as they perform important early tasks like going to their cubbies to store items at the start of the day, and gathering their items as they prepare to return home.

“We want to foster independence,” said Waverly Principal Mari Doyle. “The children are also very curious and we want to build on that curiosity.”

At tablesParents can assist in the transition to kindergarten in the following ways:

  • Promote independence at home by allowing your child to put his/her folder in a backpack each day.
  • Check folders every night!
  • Inform the school of any pick-up changes with a note in the folder.
  • Ask your child about his/her day with specific questions. What was your favorite special today? What book did you read? Tell me the best thing you did today?

Kindergarten provides new experiences and ways of learning for children. Doyle said, “It takes time to adjust and we are all here to support them.”
