Eastchester Middle School students demonstrated their expertise in history
on January 10, at the 3rd Annual Matthew DeMarco Memorial History Bee. The
Eastchester High School Academic Challenge team led the bee that involved an
action-packed competition. Questions focused on historical figures and events,
including Erwin Rommel, Henry the VIII, Tesla, Sandra Day O'Conner, William the
Conqueror, Vladimir Lenin, Brexit and the Stanley Cup!
After the formal bee, middle schoolers, high schoolers and Eastchester HS graduates who returned from college to honor Matthew's memory, participated in an exuberant "after bee" filled with much laughter!
This year's first-place winner was sixth-grader Maximillian Lin and the second-place winner was eighth-grader John Risi. Both Max and John will receive free entry to the NY State Regional Finals of the National History Bee upon taking the history bee ORQE exam by January 21.
Any student who missed the bee, but would still like to participate in the NY Regionals is encouraged to take the Online Regional Qualifying Exams for the National History Bee by January 21. The History Bee Exam, as well as the National Science Bee and the US Geography Bee, are available now at https://iac-sponsors.com/exams/. The history bee exam takes approximately 20 minutes. To access the ORQE, your child will need to provide the Eastchester sponsor code LYXHNB and confirm the name associated with it (Eastchester Middle School).
Donations for this event are still being accepted. All contributions support the Matthew DeMarco Memorial Scholarship Fund, a 501(c)(3) providing scholarships to students at EHS, therapy dogs to the high school students, and to the Eastchester Public Library.
Checks should be made out to the "Matthew DeMarco Scholarship Fund" and sent to the Eastchester High School Academic Challenge Team c/o Larry Ellis, Eastchester High School, 2 Stewart Place, Eastchester, NY 10709 or to the Matthew DeMarco Scholarship Fund, 164 Oakland Avenue, Eastchester, NY 10709.
