Staying at home away from friends and extended family members isn’t always easy, but one Eastchester Middle School student has found a way to use this time to hone his skills while bringing some joy to his neighborhood.

Eighth grader Ben Wien learned a demanding piano piece, Bach’s Prelude and Fugue No. 4 in C-sharp Minor, from Book 1 of the Well-Tempered Clavier. Ben takes his weekly piano lessons via Facetime.

“With extra time to practice at home during quarantine, my piano teacher from Concordia Conservatory, Marija Ilic, emailed me a list of new pieces to consider. I chose to work on this particular prelude and fugue by Bach because it’s so beautiful and very challenging to learn,” said Ben.

Ben’s mother, Colleen Read-Wien, said their neighbors enjoyed the peaceful feeling that the piece invokes as her son practiced.

Ben misses all his Middle School teachers and classmates the recitals and performances that come with the end of the school year.

The Wien family has provided us a video of Ben’s performance for you to enjoy.
